A characteristic feature of the Lviv region is the diversity of the natural landscape and wealth of natural resources..
The climate of the Lviv region is moderately continental. Big part o it lies in a humid, warm temperate climatic zone.

Relief

Land resources

Relief of the Lviv region varies from flat to hilly in the northern and central parts of the region. In the south sharply rise Ukrainian Carpathians.

 

The highest points of the Lviv region are located in the Carpathians

 

  • mountain Pikuy (1405 м)
  • mountain Magura (1365 м)
  • mountain Parashka (1271 м)

A characteristic feature of the land resources is the high level of usage

58% agricultural lands

 

  25% of the region’s territory is occupied by forests

 

  6,1% protected lands

There are sod-podzolic soils in northern part of the region (Male Polissia), black soil – in the north-east, gray forest podzolic are in the centre, the Carpathian areas are rich in brownified soils and there are meadow, meadow-swamp, sod and marsh soils in the river valleys.

Mineral resources

Peculiarity of the Lviv region’s geographical position is the main European watershed that extends through its territory and separates the rivers of the Baltic and Black Sea basins.
The biggest rivers of the Lviv region are:
  • Dnister river
  • Zahidnyi Bug river
  • Syan river
There are lots of mineral resources in Lviv region: oil, gas, shale oil, coal, sulfur, peat, potash containing polimineral, potassium and sodium salts, various materials (varieties of sand, clay, lime and other).
A special reaches of Lviv region are the large supplies  of curative mineral waters and mud. On their base the fmouse ukrainian resorts are functioning - Truskavets, Morshyn, Shklo, Nemyriv, Shidnytsia, Velykyi Lubin.
